The Card Project UK
The Card Project UK has been successful since 2011, but we’re rebuilding it. We’re using our own software and AI to make the system faster and more efficient for the modern age.
From 2011 to the Modern Age: Why We’re Rebuilding The Card Project UK
There is a common piece of advice in business: "If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it." By almost any standard, The Card Project UK isn’t broken. Since we launched in 2011, the business has been a success story. We’ve spent well over a decade providing high-quality, biodegradable plastic ID cards for personal and business use.
The website works. Customers find what they need, personalise their cards with a live preview, and place their orders. It’s a reliable, profitable system that has served us and our customers for years. However, whilst the current website is a success, we’ve reached a point where "functional" is no longer enough.
Our situation is somewhat unique; we are the creators of both businesses. This means that in this project, we are both the developer and the client. Although we no longer deal with the day-to-day running of The Card Project (we have a dedicated team for that), we understand how the business works because we built it. We know exactly what is happening under the hood, and we know that we can make it significantly better.
Bringing the Foundation into 2026
When the current site was built, the technology we used was cutting-edge. The ability to see your card update live as you typed was a major feature. But in 2026, the "modern age" has moved the goalposts. AI has come along and changed things, but luckily for us, we’ve changed too.
The overhaul we are currently working on isn't just about changing the brand (yes, that is being updated too); it’s about a massive leap in functionality. We are rebuilding the entire system to be faster, more intuitive, and more efficient. For the buyer, this means a seamless experience where information updates instantly and the journey from design to checkout is effortless. We're making something that already works well into something that is infinitely better
Reimagining Our Design Tools
A huge part of this project involves our custom design software. A lot of people don't realise that we actually designed all of the cards ourselves using software we created from the ground up. As part of this overhaul, that software is being completely rebuilt.
We’re making it much more responsive and adding a level of functionality that wasn't possible before. We are integrating AI more deeply into the design process to help create templates that are smarter and more adaptable. This isn't just about making things look better; it's about giving us—and ultimately our customers—a more powerful and flexible toolkit to work with. After designing thousands of cards over the years, we understand better than anyone else what is missing.
Why Custom Software Matters
When you build your own tools, you get a level of fit that you simply can't buy off the shelf. If we find a specific friction point for a customer ordering a medical ID card, we don't have to wait for a third-party update; we just fix it. Because we use AI as a core part of our development process at Richah UK, we can build resources that are genuinely "clever"—systems that anticipate what the user needs and streamline the backend in ways that weren't possible five years ago.
For The Card Project team, the changes are even more significant. We are integrating more sophisticated backend software to handle the printing and fulfillment process. By automating the "busy work" and creating a tighter link between the website and the print room, we can get orders out the door faster and with even greater precision. This in turn will free up their time to be more productive in other areas of the business. It's nothing less than a win win situation.
A Long-Term Vision
This is a long-term project. Because we are building everything from scratch and ensuring every piece of logic is sound, this is happening entirely behind the scenes for now. If you visit the site today, you won’t see the new systems yet. We are in the foundation-laying phase.
Patience is indeed a virtue. We aren't interested in a rushed launch or a "noisy" update that breaks under pressure. We are building a robust engine that is intended to last for the next decade. We’re taking the time to do it right because we aren't just building this for "users"—we’re building it for our team and for a business we’ve cared about since 2011. There is no timescale, when it's ready, it's ready.
The website already works brilliantly; we’re just making it even better by putting in more clever resources. Because we’re creating all the software ourselves, we can make sure the results are exactly what our team and our customers need. It’s a long-term project, but we’re excited to be the ones building it.
